A point-of-use reverse osmosis (RO) system is a type of water filtration system that connects to a single fixture, such as the kitchen sink, and uses the RO process to filter the water that is provided to that fixture of any impurities. By applying pressure to a semi-permeable membrane, RO creates two streams of water: one that is treated and named "permeate," and the other that is rejected and called "concentrate" or "brine." The removal of water contaminants like lead, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), PFAS, arsenic, bacteria, and viruses is a possible benefit of these systems. Point-of-use RO systems can be found in business kitchens and offices in addition to home settings. While RO systems might enhance water quality, operating these systems can result in a sizable quantity of water waste. As an illustration, for every gallon of permeate produced, a typical point-of-use RO system will produce five gallons or more of reject water. For every gallon of permeate produced by some inefficient machines, up to 10 gallons of reject water are produced.
